In this section we provide links to evaluation tools. The NPEC aim is measure and enhance the educational quality of pre registration nursing and midwifery clinical placements through monitoring and reporting of student evaluations. For this reason, we use one generic primary evaluation tool – the Placement Evaluation Tool (PET). Currently the Centre uses three versions of the PET; PET-Nursing (students), PET-Midwifery (students) and PET-Supervisor (educators). The PET is considered a pragmatic measure that balances psychometric considerations against the requirements of real-life and as such minimal adjustments for appropriate context are considered valid without the need to test for every profession (Glasgow and Riley; 2013).In addition, we provide below additional optional tools that may be of use to evaluators. For example, the MidStep for midwifery, a patient safety assessment tool and PET translations.
(See Glasgow RE, Riley WT. Pragmatic measures: what they are and why we need them. Am J Prev Med. 2013;45(2):237–43 and https://npec.com.au/references-and-bibliography/ for relevant NPEC publications)
The PET-Nursing (student)
This survey has been designed to enable you, as a student, to evaluate your clinical placement.
The PET-Midwifery (student)
This survey has been designed to enable you, as a midwifery student, to evaluate your clinical placement. Please rate your experience and return this form to your university placement co ordinator. This feedback will enable quality improvements with benefits to educators and students.
The PET-Supervisor
This survey has been designed to enable you, as a supervisor, to evaluate the clinical placement. We suggest that the rating is completed for each University student group.
MidSTEP student evaluation tool
An alternative to the Placement Evaluation Tool (Midwifery Student) is the MidSTEP student evaluation tool (Australian College of Midwives).
The Patient safety tool
This short survey is intended to accompany the Placement Evaluation Tool (PET) (Student) providing additional feedback in relation to patient safety. Please return the completed survey to your university placement coordinator.
Until the NPEC is fully established, we provide open access links to core placement education tools. Please feel free to download these for your use.
